So, started from the bottom now we’re here? We should ask ourselves where we’ve come as an artist and viewer. If Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were alive to see what their deaths had got humanity, they would be ashamed. The power these artists and entertainers have, but don’t use, is insane. They could change the lives of every poor kid in the ghetto. Sure these artists have contractual obligations to live up to from their owners, whose ultimate goal is continual black and minority suppression. The point is these artists can make a stand and go down in black history, in our history, as reformers and revolutionaries. They could flip the white corporate entertainment agenda on its head. They could preach going to college and hard work. They could change everything. Or we the consumer can stop buying and contributing to the monstrosities. We could hold ourselves accountable. We make the change we need to see. There has to be somewhere we meet in the middle. We need mainstream artists like Lupe Fiasco and Common to lead us. We need to branch out and find music outside the radio stations and t.v. It’s up to all of us. I believe in you.

What happens when we critically analyze this oversexualized, fake gangster, racist, derogatory type of music? Lil Wayne came out a couple weeks ago and says his music should not be taught to kids, they may hear it, but they won’t understand it. He’s against any sort of critical analysis from the group of people that it can have the most detrimental effect on. What a joke. So a young kid living in an impoverished neighborhood doesn’t know what the word bitch means? Or smoking pot? Or killing n#&$@s means? They see and hear it everyday where they live. That gangster lifestyle is then reinforced by the rappers that “made it?” Some rappers come from the streets, where they feel the need to sell drugs and be in gangs to get by, but most don’t come from the streets. Most are studio gangsters. Dr. Dre started and drake is bringing it to a while new level. This guys are not practicing what they preach. They don’t go shooting up houses, robbing liquor stores, slapping hoes, or sell drugs. In actuality they walk around with an entourage to protect them, they own a mansion, they don’t even shop at liquor stores, they are happily married, and they are addicted to legal drugs. Critical analysis is needed in the hearts of the impoverished cities, who’s kids gulp this imaginary existence as truth. Hell yes we should teach this in schools.

Mainstream rap is detrimental to the progression of the black community. It’s not hard to imagine that our whole country is misinformed and ridiculously uneducated. The news, movies, talk shows, and rap says jump and we jump. We are a reflection of our entertainement. That’s why rap is constantly crapped on for lack of substance and it’s horrific content. Rappers and artists rather they like it or not, and believe it or not, contribute to the raising of children, especially the impoverished kids that have no one to look up to except these rappers. Kendrick Lamar writing a whole song about binge drinking doesn’t help or promote smart decisions. This thought process leads to date rape and criminal activity. Drake preaching YOLO, which leads to any number of bad choices your mind can think of. He didn’t come from the street, he’s fake in every way. Kanye West made a statment that George Bush didn’t like black people, which is admirable, but not liking black people enough to lead them in the right direction is despicable. The dude would rather talk about how great he is and how he impacts fashion and all this other bullshit. He chases after a non-black girl and marrys another piece of overglorified shit. Nicki Minaj another person that obviously doesn’t like black people, unless you count the altering of her pigment and her nose liking what she is. She’s another pun rapper that promotes nothing to better the black community. She does a great job at promoting vanity, lust, greed, and egotism. Finally, Jay-Z retiring the word bitch. Really it took you that long to realize calling women bitches was wrong??? This is someone that is on his way to being a billionaire, we need more than the retiring of a word. After making it this far all he does is recycle old raps or talk about he made it this far.
